imc DataWorks, LLC... Integrated Measurement Engineering

Support / Updates and Upgrades

When you purchase software and/or hardware from imc, you become part of the imc family of users. The strength of this user base of over 5,000 measurement systems and 15,000 user licenses, and our close ties between our engineers and many of our users, means we never stop improving our software.

While we strive to thoroughly test all software and firmware that leaves our facility, the reality is that it is impractical, if not impossible, to anticipate and test every possible combination mouse clicks and keystrokes within our software, and the consequential interaction with the range of third party software and operating systems available to the general market.

As such, new software is released several times through the year. Software releases can be broken down into two categories: updates and upgrades. Updates include bug fixes and are free of charge to current users. Upgrades include new features and enhancements, and require a passcode to install.

Notes:

  1. In updating or upgrading Device software, a firmware update is almost always required as well. For this reason, you want to be sure to install the new software release for all users and all PCs that use the device.

    • For additional hints on Device firmware updates, refer to HowTo Tip #4 and your user manual.

  2. Experiments and Sequence files: older versions should work fine with your newer software; as a general rule, making a backup copy of critical experiments, sequences, and settings is wise before any software upgrade or update.

  3. We recommend that you do NOT downgrade systems; once upgraded, a system should continue to use that version or newer. Contact the hotline if this presents a problem.

  4. While it is often possible to install one version of imc software ontop of another version, it is generally advisable to first uninstall the older version and perform a clean installation of the new version.

    • imc applications preserve their registry settings between major version releases.
    • For advanced users: refer to the user manuals for information on concurrent operation of multiple versions.
  5. All current versions support Windows 98SE, NT4 (except USB keys), ME, 2000, and XP

  6. Versions older than those listed here are no longer actively supported; contact the support hotline for information on upgrading to the current version.

Example: 2.2R20 to 2.2R27 Example: 2.0R18 to 2.2R27
  • When discovered, critical problems are dealt with as quickly as possible, often resulting in specific patch files being made available. Less critical and nuisance problems are generally solved and rolled into the next release version.

  • New releases, denoted by an R followed by a number, are considered software updates. As such, they are available at no charge to current registered users of that software version, and are generally recommended for all users of that version.

  • Within Devices, new releases generally include firmware updates as well as the updated PC software. For that reason, if you considering an update but have not noticed any problems, it may not be necessary or helpful. Contact the support hotline for more assistance.
  • Upgrades for our Device software usually includes firmware updates as well as the upgraded PC software. Either, or both, will include new features and enhancements beyond bug fixes found in updates. As such, upgrades are available to current users for a small upgrade fee.

  • Upgrades will always require a firmware passcode (for Devices) or a software / license key update (for Software). Trying to update a system without this code will simply be a waste of your time.

At imc, we are in a constant state of software improvements and enhancements. Based on user feedback and engineering foresight, we begin the design process months, or even years, in advance of a product release. But your comments and suggestions are always welcome and appreciated.
