The Austrian company FACC Operations GmbH and its subsidiary CoLT Prüf und Test GmbH, develop, manufacture and test lightweight components for leading aircraft and engine manufacturers. Due to their expertise as system partner for winglet concepts, they were commissioned by Airbus to design and manufacture winglets for the A350 XWB long-haul aircraft. Of course, extensive component testing of winglets also belongs within their range of services. For the component test stands FACC and CoLT have chosen test and measurement solutions from imc Meßsysteme GmbH.

For the launch of their new high-performance SportContact6 tires, Continental chose to do track testing at the renowned Bilster Berg track in Germany. With its differ-ence in track heights and multiple fast stretches, the Bilster Berg is an ideal location to test the SportContact6. A total of 15 sports cars were outfitted with imc BUSDAQ-X data loggers in their trunks which recorded measurement data during the test and, with imc LINK data transmission software, transmitted the data during the pit stop.

Berlin's public transport system is very popular among tourists and inhabitants. With such a high frequency of passengers, it is important that the vehicles are put through their paces and tested in real operating conditions. For the fleet to live up to a high standard, new vehicles must undergo extensive road testing – as with the new buses ordered by the BVG from the Dutch manufacturer VDL. When it comes to equipping their buses with test and measurement systems for road testing, VDL relies on imc. Mobile data acquisition on the VDL city buses is performed using the imc BUSDAQ-2-ET as well as imc CANSAS-INC and -SCI systems.

The demands placed on a modern marine gearbox are high: naturally, transferring the motor power to the drive shaft is the main task. However, integrating auxiliary drives for different units, such as pumps and generators, as well as braking and locking propellers and shafts are also key requirements. Both in the research and development departments, as well as with quality assurance, extensive tests and measurements are carried out to ensure the highest quality of their marine gearboxes.

The SBB has developed stationary wheel-load checkpoints that can automatically acquire key data from a passing train in real time. With the help from imc, these checkpoints are equipped with high-precision strain gauge bridge amplifiers, as well as an industrial PC according to customer specifications. The system is designed to acquire safety-relevant load data, such as axle overloading and cargo shifting. It also recognizes flat spots on the wheels.

“Formula Student Germany” is a design and engineering competition that brings together scientific and academic theory of technical colleges and universities with practical experience on a real race track.During a year’s time, the students design and build their own race car that has to comply with a set of competition rules. The German team from the Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten was supported by imc Meßsysteme GmbH with one of their imc CANSAS-L-DCB8 modules. This measurement module was used to determine and investigate forces and strain that the car's suspension system was subjected to under real race conditions.

Efforts to reduce noise pollution from cars are not limited to tires and exhaust systems alone. Automobile alternators and generators, with their high rotation speed, are currently also coming more and more into the focus of measurementengineers. On high-speed roads, in particular, sound emissions play a crucial role. There’s no question that BOSCH, one of the world’s leading producers of car components, invests all its know-how into the development of quieter car generators.

Automatic gearboxes, especially advanced CTXs (continuously variable transaxle) aren’t widespread in agricultural machinery. Nevertheless, one of Germany’s leading companies in that field, AMAZONEN Werke, develops and produces various types of such gearboxes. In contrast to ‘normal’ gearboxes, CTXs have no discrete gears and therefore special measurements and tests have to be carried out.

The sheer amount of new car designs and the time they spend in development are stunning. But to bring new cars to market at ever-shorter intervals, new and innovative test and measurement philosophies are needed. Climatic car tests are usually differentiated between climate test-cell measurements and road-based measurements—a distinction which often leads to problems—such as incompatible measurement data produced by different systems and long set-up times between road and facility-based measurements. In addition, mastery of different systems is necessary. These problems have to be solved to boost the efficiency of tests.
